Transition House: Transitional Living and Permanent Supported Housing Programs
Transition House is one of the oldest and most respected shelters for battered women in the United States. In addition to emergency shelter, Transition House provides transitional and permanent housing to women and their children. Services focus on long-term stabilization of health, economic and housing situations. Women work closely with a case manager and focus on an individualized plan of short- and long-term goals that are tailored according to their needs.
Ronit Barkai, Director of Housing Programs, explains the positive effects IMPACT training had on the women who participated:
“The women were excited about being active and using their bodies again. For many the exercises were difficult because they brought back memories of the abuse and fear they left behind before coming to the Program. Although the exercises were sometimes difficult emotionally, there was a big sense of accomplishment at the end of each class and especially at the end of the course. Women felt more secure in walking outside and not fearing the unknown. They knew they had more tools if they were in danger.”
“I was impressed by their physical stamina and emotional strength. Although they were afraid and triggered sometimes, they continued with the exercises and were eager to learn new techniques. They were very proud that they completed the class. They felt more secure and safe. Some reported practicing some techniques even before the class was over.”
