Elementary School Programs: Children Ages 7-10
It's never too early to start teaching children about safety.
Because safe adults can't always be there, even the youngest children need to know how to identify unsafe behavior and respond effectively. IMPACT’s Elementary School programs teach children to call attention to threatening situations, distinguish between safe and unsafe adults, and ask a trusted adult for help. In a series of role-plays, instructors take on the roles of potentially dangerous adults and children get the opportunity to practice effective responses.
Instructors move from talking about safety issues to physical self-defense scenarios that give kids practice dealing with potentially dangerous adults.
Age-appropriate safety skills include:
- Using their voices for protection and to get help
- Finding safe adults
- Accurate reporting of potentially harmful situations
- Awareness and safe distance from strangers
- Communicating with safe adults about situations that make them uncomfortable
- Setting and following rules about safety
